This is a facility for heavy weight, centred on free weights. So that you can use it safely, please read in advance what kind of place it is, what can go wrong, and what each of us - the gym and the member - undertakes to do.
The content of this page is also set out in You confirm it when you apply, and declare it again at reception on the day of your trial or joining.
1. What kind of facility this is
Unlike machines, barbells, dumbbells and power racks - equipment whose bar path is not fixed are at the centre of it. The weights handled are also heavier than at an ordinary fitness club.
An unfixed bar path means that if your form or your choice of weight is wrong, the equipment can come down on your body. Please use the gym understanding this.
2. The risks
Things that can have serious consequences
- The bar coming down on the chest or neck during a bench press. If you fail a lift with no safety bars set, escaping unaided is difficult and the situation can become life-threatening, including by asphyxiation.
- Failing to hold the bar during a squat. This can lead to serious injury to the lower back or neck.
Other things that can happen include the following.
- Injury to muscle, tendon or ligament (strains and tears)
- Lower-back injury (including disc injury)
- Joint injury and dislocation
- Bruises and fractures from dropped plates and dumbbells
- A sharp rise in blood pressure from straining, dizziness, or losing consciousness
- Worsening of an existing condition, or a cardiac or vascular event
- Falls from tripping over equipment left on the floor or in walkways
3. Who should talk to a doctor first
If any of the following apply to you, please consult your doctor before using the gym and obtain permission to exercise, then come to the gym.
- Anyone told they have heart disease, an arrhythmia or high blood pressure
- Anyone with a history of cerebrovascular disease
- Anyone under treatment for diabetes or another metabolic disease
- Anyone under treatment for a disease of the spine or joints such as a disc herniation, or who has had surgery for one
- Anyone who has experienced chest pain, severe breathlessness, dizziness or fainting during exercise
- Anyone pregnant or recently post-partum
- Anyone taking medication on an ongoing basis
- Anyone else with concerns about their health
If a doctor does not give permission, we refuse use of the facility. This is to protect the member's body.
4. What you declare
- On the day of your trial or joining, you fill in a health questionnaire at reception.
- Information about your state of health is special care-required personal information as defined by the Act on the Protection of Personal Information. - In addition to your own telephone number, you register an emergency contact other than yourself (a family member, for example). This is who we contact when you are in no state to respond yourself. Please tell that person in advance that you have registered them.
5. What we do
Safety is not the member's responsibility alone. We do the following.
- We inspect the equipment and fittings regularly and take anything faulty out of use.
- On every station used for bench pressing and squatting, we install a safety rack (safety bars) and show you how to set the height.
- On opening days staffed hours and unstaffed hours. During staffed hours their role is reception, safety management and first-time orientationWe do not currently open at times when no staff are present.
- The premises are recorded at all times. The emergency contact procedure is posted on site.
- In the event of an accident or sudden illness we give first aid, call an ambulance where necessary, and contact your registered emergency contact.
- we carry facility liability insuranceCover not yet fixed.
6. What you must observe
The rules below are Article 12 of the membership terms.
- When bench pressing or squatting, always set the safety rack to a height suited to your body. Do not lift without setting it.
- Staff do not spot. When attempting a weight close to your limit, always set the safety rack, and ask another member for a spot if you need one.
- Dropping barbells or dumbbells is prohibited.
- Return equipment you have used to its place.
- If you notice a fault in the equipment, stop using it and tell a member of staff (or the contact shown on the notice if no staff are present).
- If you notice a change in how you feel, stop at once and tell a member of staff.
- Please do not use the gym after drinking or under the influence of medication.
- If staff ask you to stop for reasons of safety, please do so.
7. How we think about liability
We do not disclaim liability

- We are under a duty to manage the facility and its equipment and to have regard to members' safety. If we neglect that duty and a member's life or body is harmed, we are liable. We do not ask anyone to sign that liability away.
- On the other hand, where a member's own declaration of health was untrue, or where an accident arises from not following the rules in paragraph 6 above, we are not responsible except where we acted with intent or gross negligence.
- The scope of liability is set out in detail in Article 18 of the membership terms.
