Health

The bench press is a whole-body movement.

Most people take it for a chest exercise. In practice you press the floor with your feet, hold the spine upright, support the bar through the shoulder blades and brace from the inside with your breath. You are lying down, and the whole body is working. Yusuke Suzuki, who supervises the gym, calls this body control.

Desk life

Neck, shoulders, lower back.

Yusuke Suzuki writes this about where people get stuck in the bench press: “The neck, the shoulders and the lower back start to hurt — the classic complaints of office life, all in one place.” Where the bench press exposes you and where a desk-bound day stiffens you are the same places.

Whole body

You are lying down, and the spine is standing.

FeetIf you cannot press the floor, you cannot press the bar. Suzuki describes the legs as “simply being there” — not kicking, but supporting, as limbs that grow out of the spine.
Spine“You are lying down, and still the spine has to stand.” One line runs from the sacrum to the back of the skull.
Shoulder blades and palmsThe palm is where force leaves the body and where information comes in. Just as the foot has an arch, the palm is given one too.
BreathThe outside pressure of the barbell is met with pressure from the inside, through the breath. Breathing is the tool that holds the shape.

Order

Set it up before you add to it.

We look at where the form started to break, not at how many repetitions you managed. We look at the cause, not the result. The weight follows once the body is being used well. The older you are when you start, the more this order matters.
